POLKTON – On Tuesday, September 10, 2024, Mr. Alton Douglas Thomas, 75, our beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away peacefully at Anson Health and Rehab in Wadesboro.
There will be a memorial service at 11:00 AM, Saturday, September 14, 2024, at Hopewell Methodist Church with Rev. Patrick Ledford officiating. Inurnment will follow in the church cemetery with military honors.
The family will greet friends Friday, September 13, 2024 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Leavitt Funeral Home and other times at the home.
Doug was born August 3, 1949, in Anson County, NC and was a son of the late Charlie Blalock Thomas and the late Frances Mae Ferree Thomas. He was a graduate of Bowman High School and had attended Anson Technical College.
He was a veteran of the United States Army and retired as a route salesman with Bost Bakery. He was also a member of Hopewell Methodist Church.
Doug was an avid softball and baseball player and in 1962 his baseball team won the state championship and was inducted in the Anson County Baseball Hall of Fame. His love of ball carried on as he coached Little League Ball, Senior Legue Ball and All-Star Ball Teams in Anson County.
He dearly loved his family and especially spending time with his grandchildren.
Those who are left to cherish his memory are his wife of 52 years, Jeannie Wright Thomas; his children, Heather Thomas Lear and husband, Robbie of Polkton and Dustin Michael Thomas and wife, Jennifer of Ft. Mill, SC; his grandchildren, Brooklyn Lear, Cierra Lear, Coy Lear, Brodie Lear, Cooper Thomas, Harper Thomas and Hudson Thomas and his nieces and nephews and their families.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters and brothers, Jean Barton, Graham Thomas, Carol Motley, and Lamar Thomas and by his mother-in-law, Bobbie Ann “Nannie” Wright.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hopewell Methodist Church, 1715 Hopewell Church Rd., Peachland, NC 28133.
