WADESBORO – On Friday, January 21, 2022, Mr. Benjamin Thomas “Benny” Brooks, 89, passed away peacefully at his home with his family at his bedside.

Funeral services will be 2:00pm Tuesday, January 25, 2022, in the Chapel of Leavitt Funeral Home with Rev. J.D. Moffitt officiating. Interment will follow in Anson Memorial Park.

There will be no visitation. However, family and friends are welcome to visit Leavitt Funeral Home Monday, January 24, 2022, from 5:00pm until 7:00pm to pay their respects to Benny and sign the register.

Benny was born November 27, 1932, in Anson County, NC and was a son of the late Leslie Pierce Brooks and the late Lila Moore Brooks. He was a graduate of Polkton High School, where he was well known for his skills on the basketball court as a center. The Polkton High School team was well regarded in Anson County.

He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed time spent hunting and fishing with his father, his sons, and grandsons. Benny’s family often enjoyed delicious quail meals, including rice, gravy, and hot, homemade biscuits after the hunting excursions.

Benny worked with the North Carolina Department of Corrections, advancing his way from a guard to superintendent and retiring after 41 years of service. He was a life-long member of Poplar Hill United Methodist Church.

Benny was a lover of black coffee at any time of day, an avid collector of money (both coins and bills), and a local at the fish camp every Saturday night for many years.

A loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 68 years, Ann Caudle Brooks; his children, Warren (Ann) Brooks of Oak Island, Jeffrey Brooks of Boiling Springs, Patty (Michael) Livingston of Wadesboro and Bonnie Thomas of Charlotte; his grandchildren, Melissa (Stan) Dean, Stephanie (John) Springer, Brandon (Kim) Brooks, Lila Brooks, Patrick (girlfriend McKenzie) Livingston, Cydney (boyfriend Will) Livingston, Kasey (Rob) Rosenhaus, Colby Thomas (fiancé April) and Collin (girlfriend Lauren) Thomas; his great-grandchildren, Karter Dean, Savannah Dean, Jace Dean, Lexie Springer, Langston Springer, Pierson Springer, Mabree Springer, Beckett Brooks and Colton Brooks; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Larry (Ann) Caudle, Jean Wright and Rodney (Denise) Caudle all of Polkton, Polly Brooks of Wadesboro and Betty Sue Caudle of Polkton.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, L.P. Brooks, Margie Hatley, David Brooks, Mary Lee Arrington, Douglas Brooks and Myra Carpenter and his brothers-in-law, James Caudle and Bill Wright.


Benny’s family would like to thank all those who have provided their love and support during this difficult time. They would like to especially thank members of Poplar Hill United Methodist Church, the staff of Community Home Care and Hospice, and the caregivers of Home Instead who helped care for Benny in his final months.
