After returning from military service, Cary wed Evelyn Lee Ponds in 1955. They remained married for 62 years until Evelyn’s passing in 2018. Cary had a 40+ year career in the textile industry serving as Plant Manager. Upon retirement, Cary and Evelyn enjoyed going on cruises, playing bridge, extended trips across the U.S., and spending time with family and friends.
Cary was a lifelong member of Ansonville United Methodist Church and dearly loved his Church family. He served for many years as a Sunday school teacher and a jack of all trades when church maintenance was needed. On Sunday morning, you would always find Cary sitting in his favorite pew, singing at the top of his lungs.
Cary was also an avid gardener and took pride in his corn, squash, cucumbers and tomatoes. He derived great joy in giving most of his vegetables to friends and family. As a young man, Cary enjoyed quail hunting with his favorite Pointer, Jack. Cary also loved the Atlanta Braves and watched as often as possible. He felt that he would have made and excellent Braves Manager and led them to numerous World Series wins.
Cary took exceptional care of Evelyn during her prolonged illness. He made every attempt to improve her quality of life and kept her going even in the toughest of times. He has inspired his family by demonstrating tremendous courage in dealing with this insidious disease.
The family would like to publicly thank Geri Bowes for her friendship, support, and dedication throughout his final years. Scott Thompson (nephew) has also been a source of constant comfort. The exceptional team at Levine Cancer Center in Albemarle and staff at Tillery Compassionate Care were always there during our hours of need.
Surviving family members are his daughter Marsha Sullivan (Colin), son Cary M. Sullivan Jr. (Laureen), grandchildren Carson James (Kristen), Connor Lee (Kallee), and great grandchild Copelyn Eve Sullivan. Other cherished Family include his brother, Frank H. Sullivan of Burlington, and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
To honor Cary’s wishes, the Family will hold a private graveside service at a later date. Please celebrate the memory of Cary in your own way. He will be greatly missed by his friends, family and community.
Memorials can be made to the Bethlehem Cemetery fund, the American Cancer Society, or to the Tillery Compassionate Care, Albemarle.
