Charles Polaris "Sonny" Carpenter

PEACHLAND – On Monday, November 3, 2025, Mr. Charles Polaris “Sonny” Carpenter, 81, passed away unexpectedly at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center in Charlotte with his loving family at his bedside.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Friday, November 7, 2025, at Deep Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Henry Haney officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will greet friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Thursday , November 6, 2025, at Leavitt Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Sonny was born April 8, 1944, in Anson County, NC and was a son of the late Charles Thompson Carpenter and the late Eldis Glen Curlee Carpenter. He was a graduate of Anson High School.

For more than 40 years, he worked as a pipefitter, retiring as a job estimator with Professional Piping. He was a member of Deep Springs Baptist Church.

An avid outdoorsman and fierce competitor, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and participating in shooting competitions. Among his friends, he was known as the sharpest shooter with both guns and bows and arrows.

Sonny enjoyed attending and participating in local rodeos. He was also known as a great ball player in his younger days. Sonny was a man of few words, but when he did speak, it was worth listening to.

For all of Sonny’s accomplishments in life, that of being a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather were among his greatest. He adored his family and especially the great-grandchildren. His rough and gruff exterior changed into that of a teddy bear when his grandchildren and great-grandchildren came along.

Those who are left to cherish his memory are his wife of 53 years, Judy Poplin Carpenter; his children, Deborah Ross (Jay) of Wesley Chapel, Stoney Carpenter of Charlotte, and Crystal Coleman (Don) of Monroe; his grandchildren, Preston Ross of Indian Trail, Garrett Ross of Monroe, Olivia Helms (Jesse) of Peachland, Donnie Coleman (Gracie) of Marshville, and Isaac Coleman of Monroe; his great-grandchildren, Preston Ross, III, John Cole Helms, Beckett Coleman, and Barrett Helms; and his extended family, Jane Adams of Wadesboro, Carol Thomas of Peachland, Ebbie Poplin of Lilesville, Betty Martin of Yadkinville, Patsy Brasington and Kayda Tyson both of Wadesboro and Sarah Harrington (Steve) of Lilesville.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Johnny Gale Carpenter.

Because of his love for hunting, the family suggests memorials be made to Hands of a Sportsman, 9820 Casor Rd., Salisbury, NC 28146.

The arrangements are in care of Leavitt Funeral Home and online condolences may be made at www.leavittfh.com
