ANSONVILLE – On Monday, May 11, 2026, Mr. David Lee Pope, Sr., 73, passed away peacefully at Atrium Health Union in Monroe.
Funeral services will be 4:00 PM, Saturday, May 16, 2026, in the Chapel of Leavitt Funeral Home with Rev. Curtis Laney officiating.
In keeping with David’s wishes, it was his wish to be laid to rest at home, so the family has established the Pope Family Cemetery where interment will follow the service.
The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home and other times at the home of his daughter, 685 Pope Road, Wadesboro.
David was born March 6, 1953, in Anson County, NC and was a son of the late Harlee Weldon Pope and the late Vivian Tyson Pope. He worked for more than 20 years with Teledyne Allvac in Monroe.
He was a simple man and enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, shooting guns, surf fishing, camping and trips to the beach. He enjoyed tinkering on things around the house and raising chickens.
Those who are left to cherish his memory are his wife of 55 years, Gail Ellis Pope; his children, Regina Matthews (fiancé Adam Payack) of Wadesboro and David Pope, Jr. (Hailey) of Albemarle; his grandchildren, Brittany Gravitte (Thomas of Salisbury, Amanda Chisholm (Todd) and Harlee Matthews both of Wadesboro, Keeley Sullivan (Trevor) of Wingate and Rieley Johnson (Connor) of Jacksonville; his great-grandchildren, Nathan, Brycen, Dawson, Decklyn, Evelynn, and Hudson; and his brother-in-law, Mark Herring of Charlotte.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his aunt, Jewel Pope who was like a mother to him; his son-in-law, Travis Matthews and by his brothers, Felton Pope and Rick Pope.
