Doris James Jones

POLKTON - On Friday, August 15,2025, Mrs. Doris James Jones, 93, passed away peacefully at McWhorter Hospice House in Monroe.

There will be a graveside service at 11:00 AM, Thursday, August 21, 2025 at Wightman Methodist Church Cemetery with Pastor Bob Wells officiating. The family will greet friends following the service.

Doris was born July 13 ,1932 in Union County, NC and was a daughter of the late Homer Frank James and the late Letha Ann Helms James. She graduated high school in Union County and attended Pfeiffer Junior College and completed her degree from Meredith College in Raleigh. She had also worked toward a master's degree from Appalachian State University.

Her career in education started out in teaching in the public school systems and later teaching at Southview Academy in Wadesboro. Following her work in teaching, she worked with the Developmental Education Center in Wadesboro where she retired. Education was her love and she always took great delight in hearing from former students throughout the years. One of her greatest loves was teaching.

Doris was a longtime and faithful member of Wightman United Methodist Church, now, Wightman Methodist Church. She looked forward to annual conferences at Lake Junaluska.

She was a wonderful and devoted mother and grandmother. She enjoyed times shared with her family, especially playing a good game of Aggravation and putting together puzzles.

Those who are left to cherish her memory are her children, Melanie Huneycutt (Tony Wyckoff) and Terrell Jones both of Polkton; her former son-in-law, Doug Huneycutt of Polkton and extended family and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Taron Spencer Jones; her grandson, Frankie Jones and by her sister and brothers, Vivian Smith, Bill James and J.E. James.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wightman Methodist Church, Cindy Gaddy, 282 Gaddy’s Ferry Road, Polkton, NC 28135.
