Edgar Reece Pope

WADESBORO - On Thursday, September 24, 2020, his 94th birthday, Mr. Edgar Reece Pope peacefully went to sleep here and awoke in the presence of his Lord and Savior along with many dear family members, including his beloved wife and son. Reece was born September 24, 1926 in Anson County, NC and was a son of the late Jesse B. Pope and the late Minnie Cole Harrington Pope. He was a graduate of Ansonville High School and was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II. He was the owner and operator of Pope’s Heating and Air Conditioning for 40 years and worked with Scarborough Hardware in Wadesboro for 18 years. Reece Pope, in the words of his friends and fellow church members, was one of the finest Christian gentlemen anyone would ever meet. He lived his faith and his life was indeed an example of Godly living. He was a long-time and faithful member of First Baptist Church, Wadesboro, where he served as a deacon, and a member of the nominating, property, and baptism committees, to name a few. He always had an encouraging word, warm handshake, and kind smile for anyone he met. Those left to cherish his memory and legacy are his daughters and sons-in-law, Lorraine Pope Miller and Bob of Troy and Jeanette Pope Aldridge and Donnie of Ansonville; his grandchildren, Lora Lee Reid and John of Asheboro, Chris Hildreth and Misty of Asheboro, Rhonda Sessions and Marc of Wadesboro, Dale Jarman and Cindy of New Hill, Jonathan Pope and Dana of Rockingham, and Lisa Pope of Wilmington; his great-grandchildren, Marci Reece Sessions of Rocky Mount, Jake Sessions of Lynchburg, VA, Stetson Sessions of Wadesboro, Allee Reid of Boone, Bryson Reid, Taylor Hildreth and Sarah Hildreth all of Asheboro, Lacy Jarman of New Hill and Payton Pope, Charli Reece Pope and Everly Pope all of Rockingham; his brother-in-law, R.L. Ingold and Patsy of Charlotte; his sister-in-law, Lydia Pope of Charlotte and his many nieces and nephews of Pope, Ingold and Scarborough families. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Eloise Ingold Pope, his son, Eddie Pope and his brothers and sisters, Walter Pope, J.B. Pope, Mary Staton, Ruth Hough, Hyla Turner, Fannie Lou Cox, Lois Scarborough, Erie Pope, Clayton Pope and Craven Pope. Funeral services will be 3:00pm Sunday, September 27, 2020 at First Baptist Church, Wadesboro with Rev. Marc Sessions officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in Anson Memorial Park. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church and other times at the home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Sound System Fund, P. O. box 423, Wadesboro, NC 28170 or to Baptist Children’s Homes of NC, Minnie Harrington Pope fund, P.O. Box 338, Thomasville, NC 27361-9911. The arrangements are in care of Leavitt Funeral Home. One of the very last original neighbors from my time on Country Club Rd. Not only a fine Christian man, a wonderful family man, an honest businessman... but one of the kindest most thoughtful neighbors you could have. If you ever came home to a bag of fresh veggies, or new apples, or even fresh peaches, you knew youd missed a visit from Reece. Always the storyteller, with great words of wisdom and interesting facts. Reece will be missed. To the family, I know your hearts are broken. Rejoice in knowing he and your Mom are together again. Know that he exemplified what a Godly Christian man should be and embrace the memories you all hold dear. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
