MORVEN -
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. Matthew 11:28-29
On Tuesday, March 31, 2026, Our Heavenly Father in his infinite wisdom saw fit to call our beloved, Garry Connell Bennett, from labor to reward at the age of 61. While we truly loved him dearly, God loved him more and we bow in humble submission to God’s will in Garry’s life and passing.
He was born June 7, 1964 in Anson County, NC and was a son of the late Franklin Roosevelt Bennett and the late Mary Lessie Little Bennett. We rejoice that he has been reunited with his beloved parents.
Garry was a 1984 graduate of Bowman High School.
He confessed Christ as his Lord and Savior and was a faithful member of Harris Chapel AME Zion Church in Morven. At Harris Chapel, he served on the usher board, trustees and home missions. He was recognized for perfect attendance in Sunday School. He dearly loved his church and church family and always looked forward to times of worship and fellowship with his brothers and sisters in Christ. We are confident he heard the welcome words of his Savior, “well done good and faithful servant”.
Those who are left to cherish his memory are his brother and sisters, Ronnie Bennett (Evelyn) of Wadesboro, NC, Jacqueline Savage of Morven, NC and Janelle Capel of Richmond, VA; his aunts, Mozell Bennett of Lilesville, NC and Diane Melton of Morven, NC; his companion of 25 years, Cynthia Belton of Wadesboro, NC; his special cousin who was like a sister, Sharon Merriman (Timothy) of High Point, NC; 9 nieces and nephews; and a host of great-nieces and great- nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Charles Savage; his grandparents, Cassie Bell Little and Louise and Judge Benett; and his nephews, Timothy Bennett and Courtney Bennett.
The family would like to express their sincere and heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Wadesboro Health and Rehab for all they did for Garry while he was in their care and also to the Harris Chapel AME Zion Church Family for the love and support they have given him as well.
Funeral services will be 4:00 PM, Saturday, April 4, 2026, at Harris Chapel AME Zion Church, where he was a member, with Rev. Dr. Bernice Bennett as eulogist. Interment will follow in Galilee AME Zion Church Cemetery.
The public viewing will be from 3:00 PM until 4:00 PM, Saturday, at the church.
The family is gathering at the home of his sister, Jackie Savage, in Morven.
