COLERAIN, NC - Julian Carroll Thompson, age 91, of Elm Grove Rd. in Bertie County, NC, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2026, at his home.

Mr. Thompson, who went by “Carroll,” was born on June 19, 1934, to John William (Willie) and Mertie Elizabeth Jernigan Thompson, in the Elm Grove community of Bertie County, NC. He attended Mars Hill school and Colerain High School. He graduated from the latter.

Mr. Thompson married Ella Gray White, of Perrytown, on March 9, 1957, at the Ross Baptist Church parsonage in Bertie County, NC. They made their home in Ahoskie, NC. They had three children, Monte Carroll, Anita Dawn, and Mark Collins. They became such a good team that their names, Carroll and Ella, were often spoken as one. When Ella died on February 20, 2017, it was the hardest day of his life.

Having an affinity for auto repair, Mr. Thompson spent his career as a mechanic, first at H. B. Powell’s Texaco station in Ahoskie, then with the NC Department of Transportation “shop” in St. Johns. He ended his career as supervisor there.

One of Mr. Thompson’s simple joys was to engage in conversation with family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, and strangers. Born with a significant hearing impairment, he became quite skilled at reading lips. His family is grateful to all who patiently entered into conversation with him. Mr. Thompson was an avid reader. He’d read every page of multiple newspapers, and always had several books stacked by his recliner. A thrifty soul, he loved to pick up inexpensive paperbacks at thrift stores. He also loved to go fishing in the Chowan River, in other Northeast NC rivers, and on the NC coast. It made him happy to have a fishing rod in his hand and a family member or friend sharing in the fun.

Mr. Thompson loved his community. He served as a member of the Ahoskie High School Athletic Association, working at the ticket booth for ball games. He was an active member of First Baptist Church of Ahoskie and served there as an ordained deacon. He was a member of the Genesis Sunday School Class and the Building & Grounds Committee. A skilled “jack of many trades,” he loved to help with home repair projects, and build handicap ramps. He could fix just about anything.

Mr. Thompson is survived by his three children: Monte Carroll Thompson (Annette) of Harrellsville, NC, Anita Dawn Thompson of Wadesboro, NC, and Mark Collins Thompson (Melanie) of West End, NC. He cherished his grandchildren: William Clayton (Clay) Thompson (Sarah Beth), Michael Andrew (Andy) Thompson, Cody Jacob Thompson, and Kelsey Rebecca Thompson. And it was his great joy to live to see his three great granddaughters: Sarah Charlotte (Charlotte), Mary Carroll, and Lucille (Lucy) Gray. He is also survived by three brothers: Charles Wayne Thompson of Bermuda Run, NC; William Edward (Ed) Thompson; and Ronnie David Thompson, and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Mr. Thompson was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ella; his older brother, Wesley Herman Thompson (Leavon); a younger brother, Hubert Max Thompson (Johnnie); and his only sister, Iris Faye Thompson (Jimmy Davis).

A Celebration of Life service will be held on February 7, 2026 at 2:00 pm at First Baptist Church of Ahoskie.

The family would like to thank and acknowledge the angels that took great care and extended their love to dad during his final days; Latoya Bunch, Margaret Bunch, Sabrina Watford, Tikeyla Powell, and especially Sheila Tann.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Ahoskie, PO Box 649, Ahoskie, NC 27910.
