Laura Mae Winfield Edwards

Polkton Mrs. Laura Mae Winfield Edwards, 93 years young, passed away peacefully and went to her heavenly home while surrounded by her family on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at CMC Union in Monroe. Celebration of life services will be held at 2:00PM Tuesday in Red Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Rodney Clements officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will greet friends on Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00PM at Leavitt Funeral Home, Wadesboro. Born in Anson County on December 6, 1924, Laura Mae was a daughter of the late John Arthur Winfield and Mattie Mae Caudle Winfield (Faulkner). She was very proud to be a graduate of Polkton High School where she played basketball, and Pfeiffer Junior College, now Pfeiffer University. Following graduation, Laura Mae worked several years for the Allen-Bennett Wholesale Company in Wadesboro and later spent a number of years as a substitute teacher in the Anson County public school system. In 1945 she married the love of her life, Guy Randle Edwards and together they celebrated 53 years of marriage until his death in 1998. Laura Mae enjoyed her years of teaching and working but was proudest of being a wife and mom for her and Guys children. Saved at an early age while attending Brown Creek Baptist Church, Laura Mae was always an active church member. Following her marriage, she joined Red Hill Baptist Church where she is still a member today. She taught Sunday school and loved working with the children of the church. In addition, she was a Den Mother for her boys Cub Scout troop. An accomplished seamstress, Laura Mae spent a good deal of time sewing clothes for both her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed gardening, canning, freezing and making jams and jellies for others. Always conscious of being a good neighbor, she regularly visited, called and checked on others in and around her neighborhood. More recently, she enjoyed Facebooking with family and friends so she could keep up with those around her. Survivors include: five children, Guy Edwards Jr. (Lynne) and Darrell Edwards (Sharon) both of Ansonville, Cynthia Bower (George) of Wadesboro, Fonda Hardison (Dutch) of Monroe, and Ronda Scheil (John) of Cary; 9 grandchildren, Marianne Edwards, Kyle Edwards (Jill), Eryn Talbert (Chase), Taylor Edwards, Carl Bower (Lauren), Lauran Odom (Shawn), Derek Hardison, Patrick Scheil and Stuart Scheil; and three great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Edwards, Luke Odom and Aubree Talbert. Also surviving is a sister, Sarah Winfield Icard of Evergreen, NC, as well as, numerous nieces and nephews and their families.. In addition to her parents and husband, Laura Mae was preceded in death by her brothers, Boyce and Jack Winfield and sisters, Helen Carpenter and Gladys Stiles. The family suggest memorials be made to Red Hill Baptist Church, c/o Tiffany Randall, 2405 Randall Rd., Polkton, NC 28135.
