A native of Mecklenburg County, Lonnie was born November 20, 1944 to Lillian Meacham and Carl Baucom. In March 1966, he married the love of his life, Anna Hyder, completed boot camp, then married Anna again in May 1966. In 1968, Lonnie returned from active duty in the United States Army in Germany to Charlotte NC to serve as daddy to DeAhn Hyder Baucom. In 1970, Lonnie and Anna moved to Wadesboro, NC and expanded the family to include Nicole Dominique Baucom and in 1972, Samantha T Baucom. During that time the family grew to include family of choice: the Covingtons – Jack, Lou, Cindy, and Fred. In retirement, Lonnie added Patti and Jackson Poulnott to his family of choice, declaring Jackson as his son.
Lonnie was an entrepreneur, allowing him to directly care for and nurture his daughters, while Anna worked outside the home. He helped Anna finish college, earn two degrees, and continue to work outside the home, pioneering a marriage of partnership.
Lonnie and Anna loved Wadesboro and served Anson County for decades. When his daughters were young, he was Girl Scout cookie mom for many years, earning the honor “Girl Scout cookie mom of the year”. He worked tirelessly on the Anson County Board of Elections, often as chair. He supplied knowledge and expertise to First United Methodist Church in many roles – managing sound, supporting the radio station, and helping open the preschool, Open Doors, where he was known as Mr. Funny Voice.
Lonnie is survived by his life partner, Anna Baucom; his daughters, DeAhn, Nicole, and Samantha, and their spouses, Tim Hitch, Laura Rogers, and Lance Randall; his grandchildren Anna and Sydney Baucomhitch, Georgeanna Randall, Elijah Baucom Hayes, Ben Randall, and Wyatt Baucom; his grandson-in-law Chase Browne; his son Jackson Poulnott; his brother Tom; Fred and Cindy Covington and their children Meredith, Matt, Gretchen, Will and John Ross; and a host of dear friends, including Patti Poulnott, Ron Bryant, and Beverley Getzen, all of whom brought him great joy in his final years.
Lonnie was preceded in death by his parents Lillian and Carl Baucom, his Aunt Gladys Canty, Jack and Lou Covington, and his good friend, Charles Litaker.
