Polkton - Mrs. Margaret Irene Carter Sikes, 90, died Monday at Carillon Assisted Living in Monroe. Funeral services will be at 12:00 Noon Wednesday in Hopewell United Methodist Church with Rev. Paul McClure officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will greet friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall and other times at the home of Bob Sikes at 1664 Cedar Grove Church Road. Margaret was born June 28, 1922 in Union County, NC. She was the daughter of the late Hall C. and Vera Carter of Mineral Springs. Margaret graduated from Brevard College and Greensboro College, pursuing a career in teaching. She taught for Kannapolis City Schools, Anson County Schools, and Southview Academy before retiring. She was known for her love of family, solely supporting her 7 children upon the death of her husband in 1970. In addition, Margaret was an avid gardener and spent almost all of her time in her flowers. She was a devoted member of Hopewell United Methodist Church placing flowers in the church for Sunday services for over 40 years and also active in the United Methodist Women. Surviving are her children Jane (Jim) McKee, John, Russell (Janis), Bob, Bruce (Betsy), Gary (Kelly), and David (Michelle);15 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her brother and sisters, J. D. Carter of Mint Hill, Kathleen Horton of Mineral Springs, Anne Crump of Monroe, and Edna Bunn of Greensboro. Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Carson Bruce Sikes; her sister, Inez Phillips; and one grandchild, Eve Tiger. The family wishes to extend our heartfelt thanks to the staff of Carillon Assisted Living, whom we know will miss her as much as we will. We would also like to thank the staff of Union County Hospice. Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Women, c/o Kelly Sikes, 1939 Cedar Grove Church Road, Polkton, NC 28135.
