WADESBORO – On Saturday, September 2, 2023, Mrs. Mary Smith Gaddy, 93, passed away peacefully finished her earthly journey to join her loved ones and friends in Heaven while being cared for at McWhorter Hospice House in Monroe.
Funeral services will be 3:00PM, Thursday, September 7, 2023 in the Chapel of Leavitt Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Anson Memorial Park.
The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Mary was born August 6, 1930, in Anson County, NC and was a daughter of the late Charles Vernon Smith and Rubye Burch Smith. She was the only daughter and the baby of her family.
She was a 1948 graduate of Wadesboro High School and a 1950 graduate of Pfeiffer Junior College. She was a very active student in both high school and college, as well as an honor graduate of both.
On June 11, 1950, she married William D. “Bill” Gaddy, and they shared 50 years and 2 months together until his passing on August 25, 2000.
In 1990, she retired from a long career with Anson County Schools, having worked as a teacher’s assistant and at the central office in child nutrition. A member of First Baptist Church, Wadesboro for more than 80 years, she was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class and sang in the Chancel Choir until 2015 due to health issues.
Her family includes, her daughter and son-in-law, Gail and John Neal of Oak Island, NC; her grandsons, Zack Neal of Washington State and Ben Neal and wife, Amy of Durham, NC and her great-grandchildren, Emma, Stella, Anna and Luke; and several nieces and nephews and many dear friends.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Mike Gaddy and her brothers, Brad, Harry, Charles and Robert Smith.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Blessings in a Book Bag Ministry, P.O. Box 423, Wadesboro, NC 28170.
