Myra Wittman Garrett

ROCKINGHAM – On Thursday, February 26, 2026, Mrs. Myra Wittman Garrett, 76, passed away peacefully at Quail Haven Healthcare Center in Pinehurst, to be welcomed into the arms of her Lord and Savior.

Funeral services will be 6:00 PM, Tuesday, March 3, 2026, in the Chapel of Watson-King Funeral Home in Hamlet with Rev. Dr. Allison Farrah and Rev. Butch Farrah officiating. Interment will be private on Wednesday in Eastside Cemetery.

The family will greet friends from 5:00 PM until 6:00 PM at the funeral home on Tuesday and other times at the home of her daughter and son-in-law.

Myra Elizabeth Wittman was born in Rockingham, NC on June 5, 1949, and was the daughter of the late Hubert Gregory Wittman and the late Elizabeth Caulder Wittman. She was a graduate of Rockingham High School.

She worked in clerical positions with various companies and offices in Richmond County, but she is most noted and remembered for caring for children in her home for 25 years. She touched many lives of children and their families during this time, often being a bonus grandmother to the children and still to this day maintaining the same loving relationships with them and their parents. One of the first children she cared for is now a mother of her own, promoting Myra to the status of honorary great-grandmother.

An excellent cook, it was a pleasure for her to share her homemade goodies from her kitchen with all the people she loved.

Myra, a woman of great faith, has been a long-time member of St. James Catholic Church in Hamlet where for many years she supported the missions and ministries of the church. It has been in recent years that she attended and supported the churches in which her daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren attended, as well as other family members. She made it perfectly clear to her family and friends that she was ready to go and at peace with her relationship with the Lord.

She always saw the good in everyone and was always a cheerleader for the underdog. She knew everyone had the potential to excel and exceed the expectations placed on their lives. She knew they had what it would take to be successful in life. When she saw how others succeeded in life, when doubted, she was always beaming with pride for them.

Myra had a heart for missions. She always kept cards and stamps on hand so that she could write a note or card to encourage someone in some way or to help celebrate their life’s joys with them. Among her greatest gifts for missions were working with St. Gabriels Catholic Church in distributing food boxes to the needy during Christmas. This has been a tradition of giving and service that she and her family has shared for more than 30 years. Many lives in and around Richmond County have been blessed by her hands and feet support of this ministry.

She was a mother, mother-in-law, and a loving and devoted grandmother to the pride and joy of her life. Just this week, she said the first words that came from her mouth would often be the names of her grandsons, Braden, Maddox and Owen. Her three boys and being their MeMa, were among the greatest gifts in her life. While she was an honorary grandmother to all the children she cared for during her 25 years of childcare, it was when she became MeMa to her own that made her life complete and heart full of joy and pride.

Those who are left to cherish her memory are her daughter and son-in-law, Genny and Brian Baucom of Rockingham; her grandsons, Braden, Maddox and Owen Baucom of Rockingham; and her brother, Greg Wittman and wife, Judy of Charlote.

She also leaves behind many dear friends and other family members including Bailey Dawkins and Blaine Robson, and Linda Caulder, who was like a sister to her and many who are too numerous to mention.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gentry Garrett and by her cousin, Annie Ruth Caulder, who was like a second mother to Myra.

The family is most grateful to the staff of Quail Haven for all they did for her while she was a resident there and most recently to FirstHealth Hospice in Pinehurst.

Because of her love for animals, the family suggests memorials be made to Richmond County Animal Shelter, 529 US HWY 74 W, Rockingham, NC 28379.

The arrangements are in care of Leavitt Funeral Home Wadesboro, assisted by Watson-King Funeral Home, and online condolences may be made at www.leavittfh.com
