WADESBORO - On Monday, June 12, 2023, Mr. Samuel Durham "Sammy" Sessions, Jr., 64, of Wadesboro and formerly of Ocean Isle Beach, NC, passed away peacefully at his home.
Services will be 1:00 PM Thursday, June 15, 2023 at Anson Memorial Park with entombment following in the mausoleum.
The family will greet friends following the service at the cemetery.
Sammy was born February 24, 1959 in Anson County, NC and was the only child of Samuel Durham Sessions and Agnes Oliver Sessions. He attended schools in Anson County and received an associate degree in horticulture from Anson Community College and later earned a Captain's certificate of licensure from Brunswick Community College and the United States Coast Guard.
He worked alongside his father with Session's Trucking as a truck driver.
In 1979, he was involved in a very serious automobile accident. After spending a year in the hospital and working to regain his independence and ability to walk again, he was able to once again drive a truck for the family business.
In 1982, Sammy and his parents moved to Ocean Isle Beach, a place they all dearly loved. It was there he developed a love for deep sea fishing and time spent on the beach. Although to others he was limited, he won various deep sea fishing tournaments and was often sought after to lead deep sea fishing trips and tournament. He was a local hero to many at Ocean Isle.
Among the highlights of his deep sea fishing experiences, was when the head coach of the Charlotte Hornets, sought out the best in deep sea fishing and everyone who was asked immediately told him, Sammy Sessions is the best! Sammy reveled in this once in a lifetime experience.
He was also, proud of his Captain's license achievement. He worked very hard and was pushed by the Coast Guard during the training and surprised everyone of his ability to meet the criteria and become licensed. His friends and family often said he could get around on a boat better than anyone!
Although the only child in his family and his parents having predeceased him, he is survived by his aunts and uncles, cousins who were among his best friends, not forgetting his extended family of friends at Ocean Isle Beach and in Wadesboro alike.
Because of the impact and great assistance they had on his life, Sammy's request is that memorials be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, PO Box 947765, Atlanta, GA 30394, so they may help other crippled children.
The arrangements are in care of Leavitt Funeral Home and online condolences may be made at www.leavittfh.com
