MCFARLAN – On Sunday, February 1, 2026, Mr. Selby Eugene “Gene” Harney, 77, passed away peacefully at his home.
There will be a graveside service with military honors at 11:00 AM, Friday, February 6, 2026, at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in McFarlan with Rev. John Greene officiating.
The family will greet friends following the service at the cemetery.
Gene was born March 16, 1948, in Anson County, NC and was a son of the late Walter Selby Harney and the late Sarah Rachel Lineberger Harney. He was a graduate of Morven High School and a veteran of the United States Army, serving two tours of duty which included the Vietnam War.
He worked for more than 20 years with Anson County Schools maintenance department.
Those who are left to cherish his memory are his son, Chris Harney of McFarlan; his grandchildren, Haillie Harney of Chesterfield, SC and Kimber Harney of McFarlan; his great-grandson, Waylon Boan; his nephew, Jeffrey Northcutt of California; his wife, Pam Conley Harney; his stepchildren, Devin Joseph of Wallace, SC and Kaylee Conley of Rockingham; his step grandchildren, Dawson Joseph, Annabelle Joseph, Christian Conley and Casen Conley; and his brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ralph Carpenter, Peggy Martin, and Jean Thompson all of Wadesboro.
Gene enjoyed hunting and trapping; horses and participating in rodeos, nice cars and his dogs, German Shepherds and Jack Russell Terriers.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Gay Carpenter Harney and his sister, Mary Northcutt.
