Valerie Jean Davis

ANSONVILLE   Our mother, Valerie Jean Davis departed from her earthly home to her eternal home on Friday August 14, 2026 to join her late parents, Lessie Mae Davis and Walter L. Richardson Sr.

She is also preceded by a Sister Beverly Jean Davis. Grandmothers; Johnsie Smith Davis & Willie Mae Richardson and her Grandfathers; James Augustus Davis Sr. and Sherman Richardson Sr.

Our Mother Valerie graduated from Bowman Senior High School in 1969 and then attended Barber Scotia College in the fall. Even though she only completed 1 semester of college, she was determined to get a degree. She later attended Anson Community College and graduated Cum Laude with her Associate in Accounting in May 1997. She then went back to college and graduated Magna Cum Laude with her Associates in Business Administration in 2004.

Throughout her years of school, she maintained a stable job and worked up until her health took a turn in 2008. She was a Sewing Machine operator at Cassie Cotillion in Norwood, NC from 1970-1975. She worked at Collins & Aikman in Norwood, NC from 1975 until 1997 and was offered a position for Supervisor until 2001. She later joined her Daughter Kimberly at PCA International in Matthews as a Computer Room Photo Technician from 2005 until 2008.

Even though her health began taking a turn, she did not give up working or letting it get her down. She returned to her home church Rocky Mount AME Zion to help in the finance department. Throughout her time back, she became the Pastor’s Steward, Church Secretary, and Chief Financial Officer. She also held other titles within the church, Lay Council, Leader of Leaders & Christian Education Secretaries.

Along with her duties within the AME Zion Organization, she received awards and recognition for her dedication and commitment.

Her devotion to her church and church family are what kept her motivated to continue serving God and doing his will. Our mother was the definition of love, hope, hard work, strength, perseverance and pursuing knowledge no matter the circumstances. Even in her last years, she maintained her faith and let her work speak for her.

As she stepped into the gates of heaven, she leaves to cherish her memories her Daughters, Kimberly J. Davis of the home and Asheley K. Davis of Raleigh, NC. Her brothers Walter L. Richardson Jr (Cynthia) of Thomasville, NC and Michael Richardson (Tamara) of Greensboro NC; Her sister Sherry Gabriel of Kannapolis NC. 1 uncle, William Smith of New York; an Aunt, Lillian Blackmon of Far Rockaway NY. A very Special Cousin that she was raised beside like sisters, Gwendolyn Yusif of Rockingham NC and Special Niece Tyanna Carter (Patrice) of Cheraw SC. Her best friend Carolyn M. Williams. 2 Special Grandchildren that she claimed as her own, Omari J. Chambers and Zamya J. Chambers. Special Cousins, Vincent Dunlap, Joyce Little, Anthony Ledbetter, Joanne Kilgore, Michael Brown, Ricky Davis, Elder Kenneth Crowder, Barbara Horne and Raymond Horne; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, and many many relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at Rocky Mount AME Zion Church in Ansonville. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The public viewing will be from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM on Friday, August 21, 2026, at Leavitt Funeral Home and again on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at Rocky Mount AME Zion Church, beginning at 1:00 PM.
