CHARLOTTE – On Thursday, May 29, 2025, Mr. William “Bill” James Coble, Sr., 91, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother passed away peacefully at Brookdale Carriage Club Providence in Charlotte.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM, Wednesday, June 4, 2025, in the Chapel of Leavitt Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Bill Jeffries officiating. Interment will follow in the Bennett Family Cemetery.
The family will greet friends from 1:00 PM until 1:45 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.
Bill was born at the family homeplace in Wadesboro, NC on March 25, 1934, and was a son of the late William Henry Coble and the late Frances Eugenia Hill Coble. He was a graduate of Wadesboro High School and attended Wingate College. He had perfect attendance all 12 years of school. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, having served during the Korean War.
He was first employed with Westinghouse Electric and later worked for 42 years with General Electric, retiring in 1999.
Following retirement, he became an avid golfer and was instrumental in keeping up with his golfing buddies, the same friends since retirement, managing their golf outings and wagers. He enjoyed playing golf at Charlotte National Golf Club and also playing tennis at Rama Swim Club. He was known for his incredible memory. He never forgot a name, story or a date.
Bill also coached baseball and was a huge Carolina Panthers fan, having season tickets from their beginning.
A member of Providence United Methodist Church, he has served as a Sunday school teacher, lead usher and supported the church’s activities and ministries.
Bill will be remembered as a loving and devoted, husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. Those who are left to cherish his memory are his high school sweetheart and wife of 63 years, Helen Sikes Coble; his sons, William “Bill” James Coble, Jr. of Concord and Clifton Sikes Coble and wife, Amy of Charlotte; his grandchildren who he dearly loved and was very proud of, Claire Coble of Concord, Jill Coble Jones and husband, Bryson of Midland, William “Tripp” Coble, III of Concord, Lily Coble and Ellie Coble both of Charlotte; his sister and brother, Helen Bowers of Indian Trail and Ralph Coble of Wadesboro; his sister-in-law, Ellen Hill and husband, Ben of Beaufort, SC and his nieces and nephews and their families.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters and brother, Mary Frances Threadgill, Ruth Ingold and Johnnie Coble.
Flowers are welcomed, however the family would prefer memorials be made to Providence United Methodist Church, 2810 Providence Rd Charlotte, NC 28211 or to Bennett Family Cemetery, 305 Camden Rd., Wadesboro, NC 28170.
